Overview

Base Camp sits at 2400 Folsom Street in the Mission, in the former Schmidt’s space. Suraksha Basnet and brother Sutish, with chef Tara Ghimire and menu help from Dancing Yak cooks Indra Khanal and Sunita Bohora, opened in May 2020 after building a following at Dancing Yak on Valencia. The house frames the card as Nepali spice work with California produce: momos, Newari and Tibetan-influenced small plates, curries, and shareable snacks.

Mission Local and Eater SF covered the opening as a Himalayan small-plates night out. After Berkeley’s Nomad Tibetan closed in 2024, Base Camp remains one of the city’s clearest sit-down Nepali rooms with a working website and steady hours.

Come for kale chaat and pork momo when you want a Mission dinner that stays informal. Beer and wine are the drink lane. Save Copra for a cocktail-and-reservation Fillmore night.

What diners say

Diners still center kale chaat (lightly breaded fried kale with yogurt and tamarind), pork momo, minced lamb, goat soup, and pork with bok choy. Reviewers praise seasoning and plating more than white-tablecloth ceremony. Takeout chatter says the food travels hot, which matters for Mission weeknights.

Public themes: friendly service, fair pricing for the quality, and a simple comfortable room. It reads as a neighborhood destination. The menu rewards sharing, so plan two or three plates per person instead of one giant thali.

Vegetarians can work kale chaat, vegetable momo, and vegetable curries; the loudest praise still includes pork and lamb. Head to Café Tibet in Berkeley when you need a fully vegan Himalayan card.
