San Francisco Bay Area South Asian Dining
Plan by job and corridor: Fillmore and the Mission for city nights, Berkeley for chaat and Tibetan, the Peninsula and Fremont when the density lives south and east of the city.
The Bay Area does not keep South Asian dining in one San Francisco neighborhood. Everyday density sits on the Peninsula and in the East Bay Tri-City corridor: Sunnyvale and Mountain View for regional and Cal-Indian rooms, Fremont for Gujarati thali and Pakistani BBQ, Berkeley for chaat warehouses and Himalayan counters. San Francisco proper still matters for reservation nights and Mission small plates, but a “best Indian in the city” search will miss most of what locals actually eat.
Copra on Fillmore and Ettan in Palo Alto, both from chef Srijith Gopinathan and restaurateur Ayesha Thapar, cover special-occasion coastal and Cal-Indian cooking with Michelin Guide recognition. Vik’s Chaat in West Berkeley remains the region’s chaat-and-thali institution. Newer rooms fill gaps the old map ignored: KHAAR on Murphy Avenue for Northeast Indian cooking, Base Camp for Mission Nepali plates, Café Tibet for a fully vegan Tibetan card after Nomad’s closure.
Match the trip to the corridor: city dinner, East Bay snack run, or South Bay regional room. The picks below are orientation stops with full desk pages. Dosa’s Fillmore restaurant is closed; Copra now holds that bank space. Confirm hours on new rooms, especially KHAAR.
