Vik’s Chaat
Bay Area Indian street-food warehouse since 1989: chaat, dosas, daily thali specials, and a grocery next door, with Michelin Guide recognition at cafeteria prices.
West Berkeley · 2390 4th St, Berkeley, CA 94710
Overview
Vik’s Chaat sits at 2390 Fourth Street in West Berkeley, a bright warehouse dining room beside Vik’s Market. Vinod and Indira Chopra started a chaat stand inside their grocery warehouse in 1989; son Amod Chopra now runs day-to-day operations. The family expanded in 2004 and moved into the current larger site in 2009. The house still sells the combination as market plus counter-service canteen: made-to-order chaat, dosas, samosas, and a daily thali specials board.
The San Francisco Chronicle has called it a regional institution and urged return visits when Amod spent more time in the kitchen. Berkeleyside’s dish coverage still treats masala dosa as a weekly reason to cross the Bay. Michelin Guide listings recommend the room and praise chaat, bargain lunch specials, and puffy bhature with spicy chole.
Cross the Bay for snacks and a thali tray. Skip the trip if you need white tablecloths or a drinks list. Go at lunch or early evening; the kitchen closes early by restaurant standards.
What diners say
Chronicle, KQED Check, Please!, and long-running diner chatter converge on dahi batata puri, cholle bhature, pani puri, aloo tikki, masala dosa, and chicken kathi kebab. The daily thali specials board is the sleeper for regulars who have already done the chaat circuit: a main with rice, dal or beans, and pickle on a cafeteria-style tray.
Michelin copy highlights chaat, bargain lunch specials, and a roughly fifteen-dollar tandoori plate with rice, dal, raita, and papadum when listed. Diners love the spectacle of telescope-shaped dosas and the warehouse scale. Friction: early close, weekend lines, compostable sporks, and zero fine-dining theater.
Mostly vegetarian-friendly with meat on specials and some kebabs. Come hungry, order across chaat and one hot plate, and save room for the sweets case.
