Overview

KHAAR soft-opened August 5, 2026, at 193 South Murphy Avenue in downtown Sunnyvale, with grand-opening coverage into mid-September. Chef-owner Nandana Hazarika grew up in Assam, spent years in Bay Area tech and analytics, then trained as a cook and fed diaspora Magh Bihu trays before taking a storefront. The house calls itself a modern Northeast Indian kitchen covering Assamese, Naga, Manipuri, Mizo, Khasi, Arunachali, and Tripuri cooking.

Start with the name. Khaar is an Assamese alkaline preparation, often from banana-plant ash, used in dals and vegetables that taste earthy and clean instead of cream-heavy. The printed card pushes fish tenga, black sesame chicken or pork, heritage pork with fermented bamboo, Naga smoked-chile plates, and small plates that carry mustard oil and smoked heat. Sunnyvale already has Punjabi, Gujarati, and South Indian density; a dedicated Seven Sisters room fills a real regional hole.

Call before you go. Hours were still settling through soft opening (dinner Tuesday–Sunday was the early pattern; Monday closed). Treat “first in the Bay Area” as house framing until a fuller census lands.

What diners say

Our August 2026 News brief and the house menu language both push branzino tenga, claypot goat, black sesame mains, bamboo pork, and Naga chile cauliflower over millet khichdi as the education stack. Diners who know Assamese food look for mustard oil and funk; first-timers should expect clearer, lighter seasoning than buffet gravy, with real heat when Naga chile is on the plate.

Public chatter was still thin at write-up because the room is new. Judge consistency over hype for the first year. A few California-leaning specials appear beside the Northeast core; stay in the Assamese and Naga columns on visit one.

Ettan and Copra deliver coastal South Indian polish. KHAAR is a regional education project. Same metro, different jobs.
