Jamil’s Chaat House
Queen West Pakistani chaat room with natural wine and cocktails: small shareable plates from a pop-up that went permanent, built for discovery more than steam-table nostalgia.
Queen West · 1086 Queen St W, Toronto, ON M6J 1H8
Overview
Jamil’s Chaat House sits at 1086 Queen Street West near Dovercourt, in a small lemon-yellow room with a heated, rain-covered back patio. Co-owners Jalil Bokhari and Emma Tanaka named the project for Bokhari’s grandfather, Farouk Jamil, and spent 2024 popping up before a permanent lease appeared; brick-and-mortar opened in December 2025 ahead of their original timeline. Head chef Eric MacDonald runs a lean Pakistani chaat and small-plates card with natural wine and South Asian-inspired cocktails.
Tanaka has described the intent as highlighting overlooked Desi dishes for diaspora nostalgia and outsider discovery at once. The house copy is clear: they take liberties with form while aiming at traditional flavor, and every plate is built to share. This is the desk’s west-end counterweight to Gerrard banquet halls and Scarborough family rooms.
Come for dahi puri and a glass of wine on a Wednesday-to-Sunday evening. Skip it if you need lunch, a large family table, or walk-in certainty for six.
What diners say
Streets of Toronto and Tastet both place Jamil’s between takeout Pakistani and white-tablecloth Indian: intimate, wine-forward, and chaat-led. Signature chatter centers dahi puri (semolina, potato, chickpea, tamarind, cilantro yogurt), papdi chaat with garlic potato yogurt and pomegranate, and samosa chaat with chole and sweet tamarind, plus savory small plates that rotate.
Resy reviews track booking tightness, a buzzing small room, and patio demand when the weather cooperates. Dietary flexibility is a house pitch: dairy-free, gluten-free, vegan, and nut-free accommodations by email to hello@jamils.ca.
Growth edges: evening-only service, a prix fixe for parties of six or more, and a menu that punishes one-entrée-each habits. Order as a table, not as four isolated mains.
