Toronto: Gerrard India Bazaar and Beyond
Where to eat and shop when the city stretches from Scarborough to Mississauga.

Toronto’s South Asian food map is suburban more than downtown. This page is for planning by corridor — Gerrard India Bazaar as a historic commercial strip, Scarborough for Sri Lankan and Tamil density, Mississauga and Brampton for Punjabi and wider Desi grocery — instead of searching “best Indian restaurant downtown.”
Gerrard India Bazaar: shop and snack, not the whole city
Gerrard Street East between Greenwood and Coxwell grew as a South Asian business strip — restaurants, groceries, jewellery, fabric — after the Naaz Theatre era pulled weekend traffic. It was never mainly a residential enclave. Treat it as a walkable grocery-and-casual-eat stop: chaat, sweets, spices, and a sit-down meal. Since the late 2000s, much of everyday shopping has moved closer to where people live in Scarborough, Mississauga, and Brampton.
Scarborough: Sri Lankan and Tamil plates
If you want hoppers, string hoppers, kottu, short eats, and banana-leaf rice-and-curry, plan Scarborough (and often Markham) rather than forcing Gerrard to do that job. Busy bakeries and counter spots matter more than white-tablecloth rooms. Go earlier for short eats; late afternoon cases thin out.
Mississauga, Brampton, and the driving day
Punjabi bakeries, Pakistani BBQ, Gujarati snacks, and large grocery formats cluster in Mississauga and Brampton. Build a day by suburb: one grocery haul, one grill or karahi lunch, one sweets stop. Transit can work for Gerrard; the rest of the GTA map rewards a car or patient ride-hailing.
A workable half-day shape
- Morning: Gerrard for spices, snacks, and one casual plate if you are downtown-adjacent.
- Midday: Scarborough for Sri Lankan / Tamil if that is the craving.
- Afternoon: Mississauga or Brampton for bakery, BBQ, or a bigger grocery run.
- Do not try to “do Toronto South Asian” as one downtown evening — the density lives elsewhere.
