Chaat Board for Living Room Hosting
Assembly-forward entertaining — no fryer required if you shop the chaat section smartly.

A chaat board is living-room hosting: guests assemble, you do not deep-fry for two hours. Shop the chaat aisle for sev and papdi, cook or buy one soft base (potato, chickpeas, or dahi bhalla), set out chutneys, and keep crunch for last. Editorial starter — not a claim that every component was made from scratch.
What goes on the board
- Bases — salted boiled potato cubes, seasoned chickpeas or ragda, papdi, optional dahi bhalla or tikki.
- Wet — lightly salted whisked yogurt, green chutney, and tamarind/imli chutney thinned to drizzle.
- Fresh — diced onion, tomato, cucumber; coriander; optional pomegranate.
- Finish — sev or mixed namkeen, chaat masala, roasted cumin, lemon wedges — crunch goes on last.
Arrange in sections, not a pre-mixed bowl. Put sev and papdi in their own piles so humidity from chutney does not wilt everything before people eat. For the layer logic behind each bite, use the chaat counter guide.
Make vs buy
Worth making if you already cook: green chutney, boiled potatoes, chickpeas. Worth buying: sev, papdi, and a solid tamarind chutney when time is short. One homemade wet element is enough to make the board taste intentional.
- Prep
- 30 min
- Serves
- 6–8
Ingredients
- 4–6 ozpapdi or plain crackers — store-bought is fine
- 2 cupssev or mixed namkeen
- 2 cupsboiled potato cubes — warm or room temp; salted
- 1½ cupscooked chickpeas — drained; toss with salt and a pinch of chaat masala
- 1½ cupsplain yogurt — whisked, lightly salted — for spooning over
- ½–¾ cupgreen chutney
- ½–¾ cuptamarind chutney — thinned to drizzle
- 1 cupdiced onion
- 1 cupdiced tomato
- ½ cupchopped cilantro
- 1 lemonlemon wedges
- to finishchaat masala and roasted cumin
Method
- Season the potatoes and chickpeas so the board is not bland before chutney hits. Whisk yogurt with a pinch of salt; thin chutneys if they are jar-thick.
- Arrange bases, papdi, fresh onion/tomato, herbs, and chutney bowls in separate sections — do not pre-mix.
- Guests layer potato or chickpeas, yogurt, both chutneys, onion, cilantro, lemon, then sev and chaat masala last so crunch survives.
